Aravind Eye Care System is the largest and most productive
eye care facility in the world, in terms of surgical volume and the number of
patients treated. With less than one percent of the country's ophthalmic
manpower, Aravind performs about 5% of the all cataract surgeries in India.
Started in 1976 as an 11-bed eye clinic in Madurai, Aravind today has grown in
to an Institution with five hospitals, a manufacturing center for ophthalmic
products, an international research foundation and a resource and training
center that is revolutionizing hundreds of eye care programs across the
developing world.
Aravind’s network of hospitals has the distinction of being the most productive
eye care organization in the world, in terms of surgical volume and the number
of patients treated. With less than one percent of the country’s ophthalmic
manpower, Aravind performs about five percent of all cataract surgeries in
India.
Taking its compassionate services to the doorstep of rural India, Aravind’s
effective strategies cross barriers of distance, poverty and ignorance to
create a self-sustaining system that now treats over 1.7 million patients each
year, two-thirds of them for free.
Aravind is self-reliant in its core activity of patient care. However, many
areas of development crucial to achieving Aravind’s mission of eliminating
needless blindness are not inherently self-sustainable. With your collaboration
and support, you can help sustain these projects by donating to Friends of
Aravind.
‘Friends of Aravind’, a 501(c)(3) registered non-profit
organization in the US, was formed specifically to support Aravind Eye Care
System in its mission to eliminate needless blindness, by funding some of its
extraordinary projects.
Aravind is now embarking on several new projects addressing neglected areas of
eye care delivery. These tend to be high cost projects where the cost of
treatment is also high and thus funding them without affecting its ongoing core
activities is a challenge.
Friends of Aravind has established a SPECIAL
PROJECTS FUND to enable all of those people around the world
who have heard of, or participated in Aravind’s work, to contribute to
Aravind's mission. We would like to invite you to become an international
partner. Your collaboration and support can help sustain these projects.
100% of your donations go to the Aravind Eye Care System. Your
contribution is fully tax deductible in the US. No material goods or service
will be provided in exchange for this donation. Friends of Aravind is a
tax-exempt non-profit charitable organization under IRS code 501 (c) (3) –
Federal ID # EIN: 38-3532410.
